Custom Upholstered Furniture

I think it is fair to say that I am in love with designing and creating custom furniture.  It is truly what makes a home unique.  There is something so invigorating about the process of seeing your design come to life!  It has taken me years to build up a team of wonderful craftsman and artisans, each one a true expert in his or her own craft.

The design, no the heart, of an upholstered piece is created by the relationships between the fabric and the frame, the shape and scale, the finish and the tailoring…  I start by pulling inspiration photos and fabrics, then sketching  ideas.  The design of the piece needs to look and feel just right to both me and the client, and once they have approved it,  I submit the design as a “tech package” to the specific craftsmen involved.  The tech package outlines the materials, measurements, finishes, and timeframe.  Once the pieces are in production, my team vigilantly ensures progress and confirms that all details are  met.  Though I know this process can take some time, it is so worth it.

Here are a few custom pieces I recently installed.

  3. Wow. The attention to detail involved is remarkable and the finished pieces are amazing! I have recently gone back to design school. I know that interning with a local custom furniture designer might be an option when I’m ready and I’m so intrigued about the process.

    Thanks for sharing this!

Your work is impeccable and elegant, Amy and I always look forward to your posts.

It’s great to see this process and the behind the scenes photos like this and then seeing them come to life like in that last photo – that room is really nice and I love the colors being used.

So beautiful! Are you able to offer advice as to how to go about finding a quality workroom that does both wood carving and custom upholstery? Where do you begin?
