Nursery Inspiration: From Quilt to Room

Our little peanut arrives in just a few months.  I’d say it’s about time to get her room ready!

When I design nurseries and children’s rooms, I like to start with a muted, sophisticated palette.  You might expect brights in a kid’s room, but calming palettes have more longevity and are easier to update as the child grows.

So, for our nursery, we’re going with white walls and a taupe trim.  Now, that’s a palette for the long haul!

A calm space can still be happy and cheery, though, and that’s what we want for our little girl.

When I was in New York last week I found the most charming fabrics for her baby quilt at B&J Fabrics.  If you haven’t been to B&J Fabrics, it’s a terrific resource.  There’s no need to place an order and wait for fabric to arrive.  If you find something you love, you can walk out with cut yardage.  Talk about instant gratification.

This floral pattern had just the right amount of whimsy.  I couldn’t get over the unexpected combination of pinks, particularly the tomato and peach shades.

The peach and tomato pinks will crop up in small touches throughout the room.  We’re painting the ceiling peach, and I’m on the hunt for a print in the tomato shade for a side chair.

In terms of bedding, I envision white linens embellished with the gorgeous antique trims I found at Brimfield.  The linens will bring the white of the walls into the room, and keep everything looking fresh and clean.

It’s funny how inspiration works.  Sometimes you’re searching for the right blanket to finish a room, and other times it’s the quilt that drives everything else!  I can’t wait to get started and share the progress with you.  Next on my list is window treatments!

Speaking of babies!  You have to check out the shower I went to this weekend that Grace, of Grace Happens, threw for Alexis, of Fern and Feather.
