Rethink Holiday Décor:
Fresh Ideas to Renew Your Home for the Holidays

DEL MAR, California (December 8, 2009)

The holidays aren’t just about red-and-green and blue-and-silver anymore.

One of San Diego’s newest and freshest interior designers, Amy Meier of Amy Meier Design, says it’s time to rethink how we deck our halls.  Whether you’re hanging wreaths, trimming a Christmas tree or lighting a Hanukah menorah, Meier offers many new takes on how to decorate your home for all the festivities.  Meier suggests trying something new with your holiday decorations, like:

Rethink Color.  Don't force green and red on your home if it isn’t already there or just doesn’t go.  If your home has a cool, natural sense about it, mix in mercury glass and burlap accessories.  (Tip: look for mercury glass pieces on eBay.) If your home has a cottage comfort vibe, think about blue ceramic urns mixed with tight bunches of amaryllis.

Delight with Monogrammed Gifts.  Monogram a set of vintage napkins for the Christmas dinner table and then gift them to your guests after the evening is done.

Wreath Reborn.  Think beyond the classic green.  If you love leather, hunting boots, cable knits and crisp white oxfords, consider referencing tradition in a new way by crafting a wreath out of pheasant feathers.

Search Out, Collect, Horde. Start a new tradition, or add to an existing collection.  Maybe Santas are your thing, or nutcrackers.  Whatever it is, displaying a cohesive collection of one motif in massive numbers looks fabulous on a front hall table or on top of the fireplace.

Indulge in Natural Beauty. You deserve to be pampered this time of year.  Treat yourself to flowers.   Call up your local florist and ask for a weekly delivery.  Work in a lot of white, it goes with any décor.  A large bouquet of tight French roses always looks celebratory.

Go Custom with the Tablecloth.  Have a new tablecloth made to transform your dining room.  It’s often less expensive to have one made out of quality fabric than to buy a pricey one.  Think outside of the box – maybe a graphic red and white (or even blue and red) print.

Capture – and Frame – the Year.  This is the time of year to treasure your family.  Frame a series of black and white images of memories from the past year and display them on a visible tabletop.  Repeat year after year.

Whatever the holiday season holds, a little effort and creative thought can renew and refresh a home.
