Sneak Peak at Nautical Gut Job

Well this week certainly was a busy one!  On Sunday I headed out to the Rose Bowl Flea Market with Grace from Grace Happens and Amber from The Girl Is Craftee. (Can't wait to share pictures!)  Then bright and early on Monday morning, I jumped on a flight to Colorado to start a new project.  Now, I am back in Del Mar and could not resist sharing this sneak peak with all of you! My clients came to me with a two-bedroom condo overlooking the Del Mar race track and the ocean.  Sounds great, right?  Well, it was outdated, run down and dark – and I was only too happy to help them brighten it up!

First, we opened up the space by knocking down the walls, which let the light in.

We let the light in all right!  So then it was time to bring the rest of the outdoors in.  My clients love to sail, so I designed a space that embraces their passion, without looking theme-y.  While every interior should reflect the people who live there, there’s a delicate balance between evoking a nautical vibe and leaning on clichés.

As you can see, the concept revolves around navy and white, with brass finishes. I searched high and low for fixtures that had been salvaged and restored from boats.  The brass pendant light over that is being hung over the sink is actually from a squid boat!  And aren’t those brass ring pulls fabulous?

What you can’t see (yet!) is that we also added a tongue and groove ceiling, molding,  beams, and hardwood floors.  When it comes to adding character, nothing beats architectural details.
